Winchester on your doorstep

England’s ancient capital under King Alfred, Winchester is now a compact, walkable cathedral city on the River Itchen, with independent shops, riverside paths and the South Downs just beyond.

Winchester Cathedral

One of the longest medieval churches in Europe. Jane Austen is buried in the nave, and the Christmas market gathers in its grounds each winter.

King Alfred’s statue

The bronze king stands at the eastern end of the Broadway, a natural meeting point at the foot of the high street.

The Great Hall

All that remains of Winchester Castle. It displays a medieval round table long linked with the legend of King Arthur.

Westgate

The medieval city gate with a museum inside and views over the rooftops from the top.

Winchester City Mill

A working watermill spanning the Itchen, looked after by the National Trust. Walk the river path from here.

St Catherine’s Hill

A short riverside walk leads to this chalk hilltop with wide views over the city and the Itchen valley.
